Brand footprint: Resources

Building a brand footprint is an iterative process. There are multiple reasons for it, but the main reason is that it is a highly collaborative task. Brand guideline is not supposed to be a document that is buried deep under 10000 other documents. It needs to be embodied in every person in the company.

Your V1 will always be scrappy, but what important is making a V1. A good way to start is looking at how other companies have built their guidelines.

But just reading the guidelines won't do any good. Here are a few things you should lookout for while going through it:

  1. Observe what all has been covered in the guideline
  2. Observe how they define each element in the guideline
  3. Observe the depth for each element
  4. These resources can be further improved. For each element, try to think: if someone needs to take a call on this, is this much information enough? If the answer is no, think what other information would they need to take the call

Here are some brand guidelines:

  1. Slack brand guidelines: https://a.slack-edge.com/0f43e/marketing/img/media-kit/Slack-Brand-Guidelines.pdf
  2. https://www.manypixels.co/blog/brand-design/brand-guides
  3. Discord brand guidelines: https://growthx.cc/discord-brand-guidelines

Do not get overwhelmed by this. The aim here is not to create such a resource. The aim here is to really understand what a good brand guideline looks like, and start towards that direction. The JTBD here is to think really deep for each element, and getting started in that direction. Do not spend a lot of time beautifying and designing it.
